The Mars Bar Incident
I had heard about the pregnant cravings, but today was my first run in with them. I was riding the bus from work back to the park and ride, and the pregnant lady calls me and asks me if I would get her a Mars bar. I inquire “Do they still make those?”. She assures me they do, she just saw one the other day. Ok, no worries, Target is close to the park and ride, I’ll swing by.
So, I get into target, check the candy isle in the grocery section, no dice. Wait, what’s this? Oh, just Almond Snickers. Man, that looks a lot like what i remember the Mars bars looking like. I check the seasonal/high end candy section, craps. I check the cash register section, again no joy. I leave, cussing target for not keeping all their candy together. I decide to check the convenience store not from from the house, I need to get gas anyways.
I walk in, check the candy isle, it’s kinda small so it doesn’t take me long to realize they don’t carry it either. That Almond Snickers catches my eye again and gives me a false positive. I check with the clerk just to make sure. He confirms my suspicions. I call Erin, asking where she saw it at. She reaffirms she saw it at HEB. Ok, that’s close by.
I walk into HEB and head straight to the candy department. Denied. I head up to the cash registers, but there is no joy in Mudville. I ask the cashier if they carry it. She doesn’t even know what a Mars Bar is. I ask to talk to the store assistant manager. I inform her of my quest and she calls to the stock room, has 2 cashiers comb the checkout station and another go check the candy isle. The then calls the purchasing department and finally tells me, they don’t carry it.
Ok, time to call the wife:
“Where are you, it’s already dark outside?”
“I’m at HEB. Sweetie, they are telling me they don’t have it here, don’t carry it. Are you sure you saw it here.”
“Oh, you know what… heh… it might have been an Almond Snickers. Would you just get one of those for me please?”
“Heh, yeah, I’ll be right home.”
Update
A friend of mine was kind enough to order us a couple of Mars bar that were on a limited run. Too kind and greatly appreciated.
